earworm of the week
As a writer, I have always been an advocate for lyrics in my songcraft, and you might be expected to consider lyrics first in the experience of enjoying music. Indeed, I love words, and I love great songwriting as much as audiophiles. But I’ve found that melody, rhythm, and instrumentation often give more power to words than vice versa. For example, one of the most deeply moving musical expressions ever recorded is one that is completely wordless and accompanied by breathtaking vocals. I’m talking about ‘The Great Gig in the Sky’. pink floydThe masterpiece “Dark Side of the Moon” celebrates its 50th anniversary this spring. Of course “Dark Side” is one of his most famous albums of the 20th century, and this song is by no means unknown. You’ve probably heard it dozens (or more) of times, but perhaps in honor of the half-century of this recording, we invite you to listen again and experience it anew. This is a haunting masterpiece of wordless vocalization, the work of British singer Claire Torrey, who sang an impromptu, sharp lament to music written by Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright. What makes this song so powerful is that there is no need to hear and interpret language. Without saying a single word, you are simply responding to a human voice skillfully used to convey deeply felt anguish and rebellion. If you are hearing this for the first time, be prepared to be speechless.
