Welcoming a field of 82 entries between A-Class (63) and Restricted (19), the Dirt2Media National Open Wheels 600 Series presented by Hi-Plains Building Division was assembled by Braxton Weger and Shawn Mahaffey on Saturday night. and decorated with Port City Raceway clay. Spin the Pike Challenge Victory.
Adding an exclamation point to his night, Tulsa’s Sean Mahaffey took his second victory in the NOW600 A class on Saturday night. Along with his second victory of the night, he used a different licensed body and a different style of car.
Kale Drake kicked off with a late race pass and won the POWRi Outlaw Non-Wing A-Feature, No. 11k.
Taking off from the top of the front row, Mahaffey moved quickly into familiar territory around the hub of Port City Raceway and did his best to stay there when traffic hit. With his five points remaining, Mahaffey chases his Daison Pursley.
Fresh out of the POWRi National Midget A-Feature, Pursley worked wherever he could find traction, running on the final lap but trailing by 0.265 seconds. JJ Loss passed his third place, followed by Kale Drake and Matt Carr to complete the top five.
When Braxton Weger parked in Victory Lane for the first time in a NOW600 event, the No. 31bw led the first two laps before Bradley Cox made a strong push following the restart on lap three. The race appeared to be in the hands of Arizona’s shoes, but his one mistake in traffic on lap 16 spelled disaster for his No. 45.
The lead was put back into the hands of Weger as he was sidelined by steering damage while working through traffic. Chased by Carson Bolden on the restart, No. B2 made every effort to deny Braxton the win. Both times he was up eight positions, with Garin Howard his third and Landen his Adams his fourth. Stone Smith, who made every attempt to hustle the high side, held onto fifth place.
Presented by the Hi-Plains Building Division, the next excursion in the Dirt2Media National Open Wheel 600 series will take place Friday, April 14th and Saturday, April 15th at the Dallas County Speedway in Urbana, Missouri.
