U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon pledged about Fox News on Tuesday, fulfilling President Donald Trump’s mission to end the “bureaucratic bloat” within the education sector.
Since Trump’s first campaign trail in 2015, the president has been criticising the “common core” and trying to cut federal spending on the U.S. Department of Education. In “Ingraham’s Angle,” the newly confirmed secretary was asked by Fox host Laura Ingraham if the recent cuts to staff were the first step in the department’s “complete shutdown.” (Related: Trump’s ED Division warns of “enforcement action” for failing to protect Jewish students.
“Yes, in reality, it’s obviously closing the Ministry of Education because it’s the president’s mission and this directive to me. “But what we did today was to take the first step to eliminate what I think is bureaucratic bloated.”
“That’s not that there are a lot of people. It’s humanitarian for a lot of people there. They’re out of work. But we wanted to keep all the right people, good people, and make sure that outward programs, grants, spending that comes from Congress, everything is met. None of that is going to go through the cracks,” McMahon added.

The Daily Caller News Foundation confirmed Tuesday that out of the 4,133 department employees, 1,315 have been notified of their exclusion. Before the cuts, 259 employees had been let go in February as part of a postponed resignation program.
On Tuesday, after announcing the building had been closed for security reasons, McMahon said employees received notifications “to take their laptops and phones home.” McMahon said the remaining education employees will return to the office Thursday to arrange time for the released employees to return and collect personal belongings.
Ingraham said cuts to the sector had been pushed down by Democrats. She played a clip of Randy Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, saying people are upset, adding that the Trump administration is “just taking opportunities from kids who don’t have it.”
“Obviously, we’re not taking away education. The President never said that. He strips bureaucracy from education and more money is flowing to America. Better education is closest to children with local school boards, parents with local supervisors. McMahon said:
