‘Well, Then, How Do You Do It?’: Greg Gutfeld, Democratic Strategist Clash Over DOGE’s Execution

Fox News’ Greg Gutfeld and Democratic strategist Jessica Tarlov clashed on Monday on “The Five” about the role of government efficiency (DOGE) and Elon Musk in reducing government spending.

Criticism of Doge and Musk rose in February after the US Organization for International Development (USAID) announcement was overthrown, sparking backlash from Democrats over the Trump administration’s use of Doge to scale back government agencies. After airing a clip of former President Barack Obama defending government cuts, Gutfeld forced Tarloff to push the issue, urging Democrats to argue that they “don’t like waste, fraud, or abuse.”

“Go through Congress, we’ll work together and do it. You have Democrats on the first day Doge said, ‘Sign up, I’ll be happy to do this.’ However, it is widely popular as an idea.

“That’s what you said,” Gutfeld said. “Except for all that you agree to [you say] “You haven’t done that the right way.”

Various agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Education and USAID, have been cutting staff since February. However, after Doge sent an email to federal employees on February 22, confusion broke out within the Trump administration, demanding that they submit five bullet points detailing their achievements from the previous week.

Trump later said at a cabinet meeting on March 6th that Mask has no authority to cut agencies or departments, but Doge could issue recommendations. (Related: Americans have been found to be able to submit taxes smoothly without thousands of IRS bureaucrats)

Tarloff told the Doge cut to Johns Hopkins and the “scientific innovation, medical innovation” that Gutsfeld had teased about Covid-19. The two continued to insist that Covid-19 “comes from the lab” before Tarlov said, “say every story point you want.”

“You’re doing that now,” Gutfeld said. “You’re doing it,” I found this example. There is one example of how it’s bad. ”

Tarloff went on to say there are multiple instances besides the cut to Johns Hopkins, adding that “thousands of employees have been fired.”

“What are the cuts? What are they cutting?” Gutfeld asked. “It’s management. It’s redundant. It’s technology-related.”

“Veterans who are fired. Social Security payments. They mark people as non-dead dead,” Tarloff said. “What do you think about that?”

Reports show that the Veterans Affairs Bureau (VA) plans to cut 80,000 jobs from staff and return staff levels to the 2019 ERA with 400,000 employees. Democrats have criticised the cuts institutions, but VA executive director Doug Collins called out the party on Thursday for the fear.

“The thing is, you agree to this and then you’ll go. But I don’t like the way it’s done,” Gutfeld said. “Then, how are you going to do it?”

“No, because he doesn’t actually do it. You do it like you did in the 90s. You don’t do it this way,” Tarloff said. “Elon Musk is increasingly in government contracts. He doesn’t have to look under the hood of what he’s doing. His company isn’t standing up for screening, but he’s doing this.”
