‘We’ve Had Black People Disappoint Us’: Chicago Voters Tell Fox They Feel ‘Pressure’ To Vote For Kamala Harris

Ahead of Monday's Democratic National Convention (DNC), Chicago voters told “Fox & Friends” co-host Lawrence Jones that they feel “pressured” to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris.

Harris has yet to speak publicly to the media in a sit-down interview or press conference 29 days after she was confirmed as the Democratic presidential nominee for 2024. Biden gave up his reelection bid on July 21 and endorsed Harris. While some voters have indicated they will support Harris, several others told Fox News they are unsure who they will vote for in November.

“At this point, we don't know who's best because we haven't really heard much about their plans, their intentions, or how they plan to solve the problem,” one woman said.

One man told Jones he would vote for Harris because it would be “historic” to have the first black woman president. Asked about this, a woman said she “definitely feels a lot of pressure to vote for her” because of Harris' race and gender.

“I want to hear more about what she's going to do. It's one thing to be black, we've been let down by black people,” one black woman told Jones. “It's one thing to be a woman, we've been let down by women.”

Corey Brooks, a black senior pastor, said it was “bittersweet” to have the Democratic National Convention come to his city despite it differing from his beliefs. He told Jones that it was “definitely growing” for people at his church to become “more independent in their thinking.”

“It's a little bittersweet. I'm happy that the city of Chicago can host a major tournament,” Brooks said. “What's unfortunate is that I don't agree with the principles.”

One woman told Fox News that Chicago's biggest problem is the “violence” in the city, while another called the economy a “big question mark.” (Related: “Is that a trick question?”: Kamala Harris rally-goers struggle to explain her policies)

“When you go to the grocery store, even little items like eggs and bread are more expensive now,” she said.

“Conservative principles have been much better for us as a country and as a people,” one man told Fox News.

The Democratic National Convention kicked off at the United Center on Monday and will end on Thursday. In the days leading up to the convention, local Chicago businesses have been blocking off their windows and doors with plywood in anticipation of disruptive anti-Israel protests outside the convention site.
