“What Are You Doing?”: Harry Enten Raises Concerns for Democrats in Midterms

Republicans Ahead of Democrats in Key Issues for 2026 Midterm Elections

On Monday, Harry Enten, CNN’s Chief Data Analyst, discussed how Republicans are currently outpacing Democrats on several significant topics as the 2026 midterm elections approach.

An opinion survey conducted by Washington Post/Ipsos from September 11 to September 15 revealed that Republicans hold a 7% lead over Democrats on economic issues, a 13% advantage regarding immigration, and an impressive 22% lead related to crime. During his appearance on “CNN News Central,” Enten cautioned that Democrats shouldn’t feel overly confident just because former President Donald Trump appears to have a low approval rating.

“Let’s take a look back at 2022,” he stated. “This dynamic reflects a troubling trend. The GOP is more trusted than the Democrats on economic issues—by 12 points back then. When it comes to immigration, Republicans had a three-point lead, which has now increased by 10 points.” He expressed concern for Democrats, remarking, “What are they doing?”

Regarding crime, he noted that Republicans had a 13-point advantage previously, which has now extended to 22 points. “Whatever strategies Democrats are implementing, they aren’t effective,” he said. “Republicans are leading in all three areas.”

When asked about the cause of this shift, Enten highlighted the sentiments of voters. “What we’re finding among independents is that Republicans maintain a significant lead on economic matters, with a 10-point margin for immigration and a 21-point edge on crime,” he explained.

Ultimately, Enten suggested that Democrats need to reassess their position. “At this time, even if the public isn’t fond of Trump, they aren’t necessarily supportive of what the Democrats are offering either. This isn’t just a reflection on one party; Democrats must actively work to overcome the Republicans,” he concluded.

In related news, the Trump administration has seen its fourth month without the release of illegal immigrants into the U.S. Additionally, the administration’s efforts to combat crime in Washington, D.C. have mirrored a notable reduction in violent offenses.

Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve has opted to reduce interest rates by a quarter-point as job growth slows and inflation remains above the desired 2% target.

Challenges continue for Democrats as former President Joe Biden’s declining health and a struggling reelection strategy loom large ahead of the midterms, signaling rough waters. Furthermore, all eyes will be on former Vice President Kamala Harris as her book is set to be released on September 23.
