Yavapai College Reopens After Lockdown Due to Threat
Yavapai College’s seven campuses in northern and central Arizona, which were placed on lockdown due to a police threat, have since reopened. The alert was triggered on May 19 when someone reportedly brandished a weapon on campus grounds.
Early in the morning, the college sent out notifications warning students and staff to take shelter as police dealt with a potential threat. There were concerns after an individual claimed they had a gun inside a classroom, prompting a swift response from multiple law enforcement agencies.
After a thorough search by the authorities, it was determined that the threat was not credible. In the meantime, members of the public, including students and staff, were advised to stay away from campus facilities for their safety.
Once the situation was resolved around 10:40 AM, the college confirmed that all campuses were deemed safe, although they remained closed until the official reopening on May 20.
Considering the timing, most students and staff were already off for the summer, as classes typically continue until mid-May, resuming in August. The investigation regarding the incident is still ongoing, and the college appreciates the community’s patience during the tense situation.
There were no further updates from the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office regarding the matter, but officials noted the importance of first responders’ efforts to ensure everyone’s safety.
