Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., declined to directly answer a question from “Morning Joe” co-host Willie Geist on Wednesday about whether she would support President Joe Biden's reelection.
There's been discord within Democrats as officials debate what Biden should do following his lackluster performance in the debate with former President Donald Trump. Pelosi, the former House speaker, said she would support Biden “whatever choice he makes,” but Geist noted Biden had already made his decision and asked again, but Pelosi declined to answer directly. “You just talked about the president's record, but I want to ask you about where we are right now,” Geist said. “Are you supporting him to be the top Democratic candidate?”
“It's up to the president to decide if he wants to run,” Pelosi responded. “Time is running out and we're all urging the president to make a decision. The overwhelming support of the caucus is not for me to say. I'm no longer head of the caucus, but the president is loved, he's respected and people want the president to make the decision, not me.”
Speaking to “Morning Joe” on Monday, Biden asserted he has no plans to withdraw from the race and called on disgruntled Democrats to “take on the challenge” at their party's convention in August.
“He says he's made up his mind. He declared this week that he's going to run,” Geist said. “Do you want him to run?”
“I want him to do whatever he decides and that's the status quo. Whatever he decides, we'll follow it,” Pelosi said, later adding she was “proud of the president.”
Democratic strategist James Carville said Monday it was “inevitable” that Biden would drop out of the race “sooner or later.”
“He'll make a decision. People will get the message across to him. He'll understand. His family will understand,” Carville said. “They'll pray and they'll make the right decision. I have no doubt about that, but someone has to think ahead while we dawdle here.”
