- The White House on Friday released a list of initiatives by seven major tech companies aimed at addressing the risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI).

The White House on Friday released a list of seven top tech companies’ pledges to “manage the risks” of artificial intelligence (AI), but experts told the Daily Caller News Foundation that they wouldn’t have a material impact.
Seven big tech companies – Amazon, Anthropic, Google, Inflection, Meta, Microsoft and OpenAI – made immediate “voluntary commitments” to promote responsible AI development, focusing on “three principles that must be fundamental to the future of AI: safety, security and trust.” according to to the White House fact sheet. Experts told the DCNF that such pledges are only symbolic victories or sane starting points with no meaningful effect.
“The industry is moving faster than formal regulation can keep up, so it’s a good place to start,” Samuel Hammond, senior economist at the American Innovation Foundation, told DCNF.
Voluntary efforts include issuing public reports on AI’s “features, limitations, and areas of appropriate and inappropriate use,” such as its impact on “fairness and prejudice,” according to the factsheet. Another effort is to conduct research on preventing AI risks such as “harmful prejudice, discrimination and privacy protection.”

Hammond isn’t optimistic that these efforts will be a long-term solution to tackling the risks of AI.

“I think you’ll see left-wing activity there. They’ll take a bite of an apple and keep going,” Charles Sauer, founder and chairman of the Market Institute, told the DCNF.
Sauer told the DCNF that rather than Big Tech influencing the Biden administration, “it’s more like the government is making these companies stronger.”
“I think what we really need as a country is a separation of technology and the state,” he said. “We need to keep governments from inventing new innovations, and that is how we grow.”
The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy did not immediately respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.
