WFAA’s Jason Whiteley accused Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz of repeatedly pressing his position on abortion during Tuesday night’s debate with Democratic Texas Rep. Colin Allred. vehemently criticized.
Mr. Whiteley repeatedly questioned Mr. Cruz about his personal stance on abortion. Cruz highlighted the divisive nature of the abortion debate and talked about addressing the issue through elections, before questioning the host about why he continues to bring up the issue.
“Texas has one of the strictest anti-abortion states in the country,” Whiteley said. “As you know, there are no exceptions for rape or incest. In 2021, you co-sponsored a bill in Congress that included those exceptions. But a year later, when the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade, , you said you agree with the Texas law, which has no exceptions. So the question tonight is, where do you stand on this? And we as Texans and as fathers. I’m looking for a personal opinion.”
“Listen, abortion is an issue that many Texans and many Americans care deeply about,” Cruz responded. “And it’s an issue that people of goodwill can disagree on. People are wholeheartedly and deeply pro-choice. People are wholeheartedly and deeply pro-choice. And all sorts of positions in between. I agree with the U.S. Supreme Court’s opinion that under our Constitution, the way to resolve such issues, issues of real, genuine disagreement, is at the ballot box. That’s it.”
Whiteley then tried to steer the conversation back to the original question after Allred had a chance to speak, demanding a direct answer from Cruz about his personal position on abortion regarding the rape and incest exceptions. Mr. Cruz talked about Mr. Allred’s legislative history on issues such as parental rights, and then Mr. Whiteley asked, “Why is this an issue you’re not going to address, whether you support or oppose exceptions?” he asked.
“Jason, I’m interested,” Cruz shot back. “Why do you keep asking me that?”
current cruise lead FiveThirtyEight’s latest polling average has Allred leading by 4 percentage points.
