Pelosi Responds to Trump’s Insider Trading Allegations
Nancy Pelosi, the California Democrat, showed noticeable frustration during her appearance on CNN with Jake Tapper. The discussion quickly turned to allegations of insider trading involving herself and former President Donald Trump.
On Wednesday, Trump voiced his support for a ban on government officials trading stocks, suggesting that Pelosi should be investigated for possible insider trading. Tapper initiated the conversation but faced some technical issues while trying to play a clip of Trump’s comments. In the midst of this, he attempted to read Trump’s remarks aloud.
“Let’s see what he said. Sorry about the technical difficulties,” Tapper began, trying to continue without interruption. But Pelosi interjected, stating, “Why do you have to read it? We’re supposed to be discussing Medicaid’s 60th anniversary, which is why I’m here.” She seemed eager to steer the conversation back to the topic at hand.
Trump later remarked to a White House correspondent that he conceptually supports laws against insider trading by government officials and brought up how wealthy Pelosi is, implying that she had “insider information.” He stated, “She made her fortune with her husband, and I think that’s a disgrace,” further adding that Pelosi should be investigated due to her substantial returns.
Tapper gave Pelosi a chance to respond to Trump’s accusations. “That’s ridiculous,” she countered, asserting her support for measures on congressional trading. She added, “I don’t think anyone’s doing anything wrong. If they are, they’ll face charges. But this shouldn’t undermine public confidence.” She then shifted focus, suggesting that Trump often projects his issues onto others.
Pelosi continued, “He may mock us, but someone influenced by him broke into our home and attacked my husband. He finds humor in that, but I have other serious complaints about him.” In light of Trump’s call for an investigation, she emphasized her advocacy for the Honest Act, also known as the Unethical Securities and Trust Act, which seeks to prevent high-ranking federal officials from benefiting financially from stocks under regulatory oversight.
In addition to criticizing Pelosi, Trump also took aim at Republican Senator Josh Hawley during the same afternoon.
