COCHISE COUNTY, Ariz. (KGUN) — The City of Wilcox recently won a new grant to purchase license plate reading cameras.
Cochise County leaders said the camera checks license plates against a database that includes information on Amber Alerts, Silver Alerts, stolen vehicles, and license plate numbers associated with vehicles registered with the Arizona Crime Information Center. It is said to be used to refer to a number. The cameras also allow for a more coordinated effort among law enforcement agencies across the state.
If the license plate captured by the camera is confirmed in the database, an alert is sent to the police along with the last known location of the vehicle.
Cochise County leaders say these cameras do not record video or the driver. The camera also doesn't check things like speed, expired registration, or expired insurance.
All data captured by the camera is permanently deleted after 30 days. Every time footage from a camera is displayed, it is recorded on the system. All requests for access to data must be approved by the Wilcox Department of Public Safety.
