Williams police identify Anthony Villarreal as overturned kayaker who died on Dogtown lake

A man was missing after his kayak capsized early Friday morning, and authorities recovered his body from Dogtown Lake Saturday morning.

The man was identified as Anthony Villarreal, 58, of Corvallis, Montana, according to a news release from the Williams Police Department.

Williams police said the Maricopa County Search and Rescue Dive Team recovered Villarreal's body.

“Due to the complexity of the search, specialized resources were brought in, including Maricopa County Search and Rescue's dive team and underwater robots,” the news release said.

Around 11 a.m. Friday, Williams police responded to a distress call.We are reporting a capsized kayaker on Dogtown Lake.

Witnesses at the scene said a sudden gust of wind may have caused Villarreal's kayak to flip over, according to a police news release.

Police added that despite the “heroic efforts” of witnesses who swam to his aid, Villarreal disappeared into the water and was not found until Saturday morning.

“In light of this tragedy, the Williams Police Department would like to remind all boaters and kayakers to always wear a life preserver while on the water. Doing so will greatly increase your chances of survival in the event of an accident or capsize. Added release.

PD Williams expressed his sympathy to Villarreal's family and thanked MCSO for their assistance.
