Winter storm causes ‘extreme weather conditions’ in north Arizona

Arizona, USA — Another winter storm hits Arizona, bringing snow and high winds to the Flagstaff area and rain to the Valley.

The Arizona Department of Transportation said the following highways are closed due to weather:

  • US 180 North of Snowbowl (MP 236-248)
  • US 191 in both directions south of Alpine (MP 188-253)
  • East of Camp Verde to SR 87 to SR 260 (MP 229-251)
  • SR 89A both directions between Sedona and Flagstaff (MP 375-398)
  • SR 87 in both directions between State Route 260 (MP 325-278) north and Winslow
  • SR 64 (MP 244-261) near Grand Canyon National Park East Entrance
  • SR 366 near Mount Graham in both directions (MP 131-137)

Other closures and delays

Peach Springs School District: Schools will be canceled on Wednesday, March 1st for all K-12s. This includes Elementary, Music Mountain Junior/Senior. high school and district office.

City of Flagstaff: Administrative offices and non-essential facilities will be closed on Wednesday, March 1st.

Flagstaff Unified School District: All classes will be closed on Wednesday, March 1st.

Northern Arizona University: All in-person classes at the Flagstaff Mountain, Yavapai and Show Low campuses on Wednesday, March 1 have been cancelled.

All Blue Ridge schools will be closed Thursday

Wednesday:

10:15 p.m. Arizona experienced another winter storm in early March that brought snow to the High Country and rain to the Valley.




8:45 p.m. SR 238 is closed from Milepost 40 near Maricopa to Gila Bend. The closure is due to flooding.

8:40 p.m. Good news for the blackout front.

SRP currently reports fewer than 50 customers using the power supply. APS reports about 625 customers without electricity.

8:30 pm East Valley has a few more hours of moderate to heavy rain

About 3,300 customers are currently out of power, according to SRP. Click here to check your region.

7:10 p.m. ADOT snowplows are out in the Flagstaff area.

7 pm As this series of thunderstorms traverses the valley, it can produce torrential downpours, cloud-to-lightning strikes, small hail, and wind gusts of 40 to 45 miles per hour.

3:45 p.m. If you are driving in central or southern Arizona, be aware that the roads can be slippery. Be careful there!

3:40 p.m. Snow and rain showers will linger in the eastern half of the state early Thursday, but by Thursday afternoon we’ll all be out in the sun.

3 pm: Arizona State Police are strongly discouraging people from driving through the danger zone during winter storms.

2 pm: The National Weather Service says to prepare for rain and snow this afternoon.

12:45 pm.: Northern Arizona will see heavy snowfall this afternoon and evening.

10:15 AM: Multiple roads were closed due to weather conditions.

8:45 am: Snow continues to fall in the High Country.

5:58 AM: ADOT recommends traveling in “extreme weather conditions”.

4:15 AM: Snowstorms and snow drifts creating hazardous conditions in the northern half of the state.

2 am: Snow began to fall in the Flagstaff area early Wednesday morning.
