Winter weather leads to highway closures, accidents in Kingman area | Complimentary

According to the Mojave County Sheriff’s Office, wet and icy roads have caused multiple vehicle accidents this week. Currently, the Arizona Department of Transportation has announced the closure of Interstate 40 and State Route 98 due to severe winter weather.

The announcement was made Tuesday, closing I-40 between U.S. Highway 93 and the town of Ash Fork. State Route 68 in Kingman was also closed between Mileposts 6 and 18. And if weather conditions continue to worsen, more highway closures in northern Arizona could be ordered, transportation officials said.

Authorities have reported as many as four disabled vehicles or vehicle accidents in the Kingman area alone as of 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, with snow reported on SR 68 between Kingman and Bullhead City .

No such weather or accidents have yet been reported in Havasu, according to transport officials.

According to the Mojave County Sheriff’s Office, people traveling in central or northern Mojave County are advised to drive slowly on icy or snow-covered roads. Drivers must accelerate and decelerate slowly to avoid skidding on the roadway. Drivers should also increase their distance from other vehicles and stop for more time to avoid collisions.

The National Weather Service is forecasting possible showers and thunderstorms through Wednesday night.

Visitors to the Kingman area can expect gusts of up to 38 mph and snow on Wednesday night. Highs in the Kingman area will stay around 44 degrees on Thursday, with daytime temperatures expected to reach 52 degrees on Friday.
