Wisconsin Ends Ban On Carrying Firearms While Fishing

Wisconsin on Wednesday lifted longstanding restrictions on gun ownership, allowing state residents to carry firearms while fishing.

The Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty announced the news in a press release. Published On June 6, the company filed a lawsuit against the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), alleging that the ban violates the Second Amendment.

“This action by the DNR properly restores the constitutional freedoms afforded to our clients and thousands of Wisconsin anglers,” said Skylar Croy, the plaintiffs' attorney. Houston Chronicle.

DNR spokeswoman Molly Meister said the agency hasn't enforced the law since 2011, when the state legalized the carrying of concealed firearms.

“Officials will continue to enforce laws prohibiting unauthorized fishing methods, including the use of guns, firearms or similar devices to take fish,” she told the Houston Chronicle.

D&S Bait owner Patrick Hasberg said he doesn't have a problem with carrying a firearm while fishing, but he didn't see the need to repeal the ban.

“I think this rule change is kind of ridiculous. I don't think it's going to change much when it comes to fishing. Anyone who wanted to own a gun before would have done so already,” he told WKOW.
