A Missouri woman was arrested Tuesday after allegedly lacing her husband's soda with weed killer, the local sheriff's office announced.
Michelle Peters, 47, is accused of lacing her husband's Mountain Dew drinks with the chemical Roundup on multiple occasions between May and June, according to a press release from the Laclede County Sheriff's Office.
The husband told police he noticed the drinks tasted funny and checked his camera, where he saw his wife bring a bottle of Roundup and a bottle of soda into the home on June 14. according to ABC7 Chicago.
“After beginning to feel ill, the victim began to suspect that the soda had been tampered with. The victim provided the Sheriff's Office with video surveillance footage that showed Michelle Peters tampering with the Mountain Dew that was stored in the garage refrigerator,” the press release stated.
Authorities said the victim was apparently the only person in his household who had consumed Mountain Dew. (Related article: Arizona wife sentenced after pleading guilty to trying to poison husband with bleach in his coffee).
When authorities questioned Peters on Monday, he said he had not put any pesticide in the drink, according to ABC7. When asked why he had taken the two bottles from the garage, he told authorities he was planning to use them to make a weed killer. He said he got the idea from social media, according to the outlet.
Peters later admitted to police that he had put the insecticide in the Mountain Dew bottle, according to the outlet.
ABC7 reports that the 47-year-old woman allegedly poisoned her husband's drink to “spite him” after he apparently wasn't happy with the 50th birthday party she threw for him.
Peters was arrested and held without bail at a local jail, according to the sheriff's office.
