(CNN) — The National Park Service said a woman died Sunday while trying to hike eight miles in Grand Canyon National Park.
A 57-year-old woman passed out while hiking near the Tweep section of the park, according to a Park Service news release. Park rangers found her early Monday morning around 1 a.m. and pronounced her dead.
Temperatures in the area topped 100 degrees Celsius, reaching nearly 114 degrees Celsius in some areas, according to the Park Service.
Excessive heat warnings are in place for the interior of the Grand Canyon through Wednesday, according to NPS.
Hikers are advised by park rangers not to hike the inner canyon between 10am and 4pm during the summer, as some of the trail can exceed 120 degrees.
The Parks Service is working with the Mojave County Coroner to investigate the incident.
Increase in deaths from heatstroke
The woman’s death came less than two weeks after her stepfather and one of her stepchildren died while hiking in the extreme heat. Big Bend National Park Southwest Texas Park Service announced in June. The agency said the temperature reached 119 degrees Celsius.
A 2021 study shows that heatstroke deaths have increased 74% since 1980. And extreme heat is Weather-related killer number one for humans, according to Environmental Protection Agency.
“The most problematic thing about the heat is that it’s a nasty climate problem. It kills a lot of people, but it’s not as impressive as a hurricane or something like that. It’s happening all the time. So it’s despicable,” says Tariq Venmania, an environmental epidemiologist at the University of California, San Diego. told CNN.
