Glacier National Park Rangers said a Kansas tourist died after falling off a rocky cliff into a creek on the west side of the park and drowning.
The accident occurred Monday afternoon at Avalanche Creek, one of the park’s most popular day-hiking areas.
A 28-year-old woman, whose name was not immediately released, was climbing a “rock overhang” when she fell into a creek and was swept into a gorge, park researchers said.
Authorities said someone had seen her in the water passing under the bridge. cedar path And I was able to walk through the torrent and pull myself up to the shore. They said the group immediately started CPR and sent others to locate the rangers and call 911.
Flathead County relayed the call to GNP Dispatch, which dispatched NPS staff, ALERT, and the Three Rivers Ambulance to the scene. However, ALERT medical personnel ruled her dead at the scene. Rangers carried her body off the sidewalk and then transported it to her funeral.
Park officials thank the bystanders for their assistance and other agencies who cooperated in the rescue effort. The park also said it “expresses its deepest condolences” to the families and friends of the victims.
The accident is a tragic reminder of the two leading causes of death in Glacier National Park: falls and drowning. The park continues to remind visitors to be careful when exploring areas with fast-flowing rivers and waterfalls.
