Woman formally charged for fatal shooting

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – A young woman accused of killing a man near Somerton appeared in court for the second time Wednesday.

Maribel Ornelas, 21, was formally charged with second-degree murder and aggravated assault.

Yuma County deputies say Ornelas shot and killed 18-year-old Isa Granillo earlier this month.

The victim was found by authorities in his car with gunshot wounds.

“The suspect and victim were not in the same vehicle,” said Yuma County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Tania Pavlak.

The woman is also charged with transporting drugs and drug paraphernalia for sale.

Local residents in the area reacted to the news of the murder of an 18-year-old boy.

Yuma County resident Pablo Figueroa said, “It's unfortunate… such a young life was lost. The violence among young people is really tough right now. It's so harsh… it's too much.”

Ornelas' bail remains at $1 million, and his next court appearance will be next week.
