Woman in court after fatal wrong-way crash

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – A young Wellton woman involved in a drunken wrong-way crash that killed a man in the Fortuna foothills faces eight felonies, including second-degree murder, on Tuesday. He appeared in court on his first charge. Meeting with her lawyer.

Chiara Gomez, 22, is charged with eight felonies, including one count of second-degree murder, and several counts of aggravated DUI and wrong-way driving.

The incident occurred last September when Gomez was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 8 when his vehicle skidded near milepost 12.

Gomez continued driving the wrong way and collided head-on with another vehicle, this time an SUV, at milepost 10. A gray pickup truck then rear-ended the black SUV.

The driver of the car, Gomez, and the driver of the SUV were taken to a Phoenix hospital. The driver of the SUV later died from his injuries.

Gomez was booked into the Yuma County Jail on Wednesday, January 10th.
