Women’s Soccer Prepares for Its Second Week of the Season

NAU Women’s Soccer Prepares for Upcoming Matches

Flagstaff, Arizona (August 19, 2025) – The Northern Arizona women’s soccer team is gearing up for two matches this week. They are set to face UC San Diego on Thursday during their first road trip to California, then return home to take on Phoenix College on Sunday.

The game against UC San Diego will kick off at 7 PM on Thursday and both matches will be available for streaming on ESPN+.

In addition to the match, fans are invited to a free event called “The Jacks Are Back” on Sunday at noon. This will be an opportunity for fans to get autographs from Lumberjack student-athletes, participate in games, and build excitement before supporting the NAU soccer team.

Last week was a mixed bag for the Lumberjacks, who ended with a 1-1 record after defeating Embry-Riddle 3-1 on Thursday and losing 2-1 to Nevada on Sunday. In their season opener against Embry-Riddle, NAU fired off 34 shots, with three of those goals scored by Kaylee Muniz, Mikara Board, and Lily Nesland. Meanwhile, Flagstaff native Morgan Kathryn scored her first career goal during the match against Nevada, but the team unfortunately saw Nevada score twice in the second half to clinch the win.

The last encounter between NAU and UC San Diego was in 2022, where the Tritons emerged victorious with a 1-0 win in Flagstaff. This year, UC San Diego has already played once, losing 3-2 to California. A standout for the Tritons, freshman forward Avativa, was named the Big West Women’s Football Freshman of the Week after her two goals in her debut game.

On Sunday, NAU will welcome Phoenix College to Lumberjack Stadium, marking the first matchup between these two programs. The Bears had a strong 2024 season, finishing with a 16-3-1 record and winning their third consecutive Region 1, Division II title after a 2-1 overtime triumph over Pima Community College. They also made an appearance in the NJCAA National Championship but were eliminated during pool play.

Notably, Carmen Coronado from Phoenix College was named NJCAA First Team All-American and ACCAC Player of the Year after netting 23 goals in just 18 games.
