Republican strategist Scott Jennings on Thursday clashed with former Obama administration official David Axelrod over Vice President Kamala Harris' response to a question about policy changes.
Harris and Minnesota Democratic Governor Tim Walz Interview Harris spoke with CNN host Dana Bash on Thursday, the first interview she has given since President Joe Biden announced he was ending his reelection bid on July 21. Jennings, speaking on a panel that aired on CNN after the interview, questioned whether Harris' policy shifts indicate she is able to set aside her values for political advice. “You say she did what she did in 2019 because she was getting cutting edge political advice,” Jennings told Axelrod. “If you don't know anything about this person who wanted to be president, wouldn't it be a problem for you to know that he may have certain instincts and values, but that he was willing to put those aside because he had political consultants?”
“My answer is that I find some solace in the fact that they have values and principles and are not completely transactional,” Axelrod responded. “And that's what sets her apart from the candidate she's running against, but still, it was a good thing… He's a marketer, he puts out ideas, he sees what gets the crowd going, and then he acts on it. That's why the wall was built.”
In the interview, Harris and Waltz addressed several issues, including the vice president's performance as a “border czar,” his stance on fracking, and Biden's claim that he's “okay” following the president's performance in a June 27 CNN debate with former President Donald Trump.
