PHOENIX — A Cave Creek reverse runner put his life in danger early Sunday morning when he collided with a deputy from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office who was responding.
The sheriff’s office said the lieutenant was “okay.”
A deputy was dispatched to the Cave Creek and Autoplane Road area of Cave Creek at approximately 2:15 a.m., according to a press release. On the way to the scene, the wrong-way driver collided with the car of the lawmaker who was responding.
Alcohol and speed are being investigated as potential factors in crashes. The MCSO Vehicle Crime Unit is investigating.
Most wrong-way accidents are caused by drivers with disabilities, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. Three out of four wrong-way accidents occur between 6:00 pm and 6:00 am, and one-third of wrong-way accidents occur between midnight and 3:00 am. More than half of reverse driving accidents occur on weekends.
