There's no question that Republicans have struggled to unite behind one message on abortion since Roe v. Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court.
Former President Donald Trump recently said he believes abortion should be a state issue decided by the “will of the people” of each state. Trump's comments drew backlash from other Republicans, including Sen. Lindsey Graham (D-La.), who has pushed for federal restrictions on abortion.
Many Republicans now seem afraid to take a strong pro-life stance because they fear Democrats will be successful in using the issue as leverage against Republicans in November.
They fear more outcomes like the Alabama congressional election in March, in which Democratic candidate Marilyn Lands won her seat on an abortion-focused campaign and drew national attention.
Rather than trying to shy away from taking a tough stance on abortion, Republican politicians should take a lesson from U.S. Sen. Katie Britt.
Earlier this week, Rep. Britt (R-Montgomery) got into a sparring session with HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra over the Biden administration's abortion policy.
The Biden administration has made it clear that it will not draw the line when it comes to taking an unborn child’s life.
And now they're admitting they want taxpayers' hard-earned money to fund abortions. I will not stop fighting to protect the Hyde Amendment.pic.twitter.com/KjySWgfeFN

Britt criticized the administration for removing any reference to the Hyde Amendment from HHS's budget request.
“When we're talking about the budget, I just believe this,” Britt said, “and I want people to know where I come from and why I truly believe we have to protect the Hyde Amendment.”
This is the first lesson I learned from Britt about how to counter the pro-life left: Republicans may disagree about abortion restrictions, but at the very least, they can all unite in the belief that our tax dollars should not be used to regulate abortion.
Britt went further, pointing out how extreme Democrats have been on this issue.
“So they actually deliver the baby breech, put scissors in the baby's neck, cut it open, suck out the brain so it can pass through the birth canal,” she explained. “And then, if the baby is born alive, they also have the opportunity to actually kill the baby by putting a needle in his heart. Do you believe that we should be able to save that baby on that operating table? Or do you believe that our taxpayer money gives this woman the right to say, 'Don't save my child'?
“There are seven states in the country and the District of Columbia that still allow it. We're one of seven countries that allow it to be done domestically. The other two are North Korea and China.”
Democrats are currently trying to portray Republicans as extremists, but Britt exposes who the real extremists are in Congress. She points out that when it comes to legal abortion, most Democrats are unwilling to say how far the deadline should go. That means they believe abortion should be available up until the moment of birth, something all Republicans can oppose.
These are the main pro-life messages that could unite the Republican Party. Unfortunately, the party has missed opportunities in the past. They could have united behind Tuberville's military control over government funding for abortions in the military, but instead they caved. Now Trump is watering down the pro-life message in Arizona and Florida. It's sad.
Republicans need to learn from Britt and point out that Democrats are trying to use taxpayer funds to pay for abortions that can occur shortly before birth. That's an effective message that can win elections.
