Yavapai Baseball Secures Series Win Over Eastern Arizona, Extends Streak Before Finale Loss | Prescott Valley Times local news







Yavapai College Roughriders took place at the conference last weekend against East Arizona in the 3-game series. Roughriders won in two of the three matchups, extending their winning streak to 11 games before Giramonster stopped a run in the series finale.

Game 1 – Orton’s no hitter leads Roughrider to victory

Friday’s series opener saw a dominant performance from pitcher Traig Orton. Over nine innings, Orton faced 30 batters and did not allow a hit while recording five strikeouts.

Offensively, the Roughriders were fueled by Matthew Peterson, Caleb Horse, Liam Richards and Justin Cherington, who crossed the home plate, respectively. AJ Diaz, Kevin Ramos, Brady Francisco and Cherrington hit the run. Richards and Cherington also added the stolen base to their efforts.

Defensively, Francisco led with five put outs, with Peterson, Ramos and Richards each leading four Richards.

Game 2 – Roughrider continues rolling in an 8-4 victory

Roughriders had momentum in Saturday’s opener, securing an 8-4 victory. Nathan Nichols and Liam Richards each led the charge with two runs, while Dias, Horse, Francisco and Jackson Scofield also contributed to the scoreboard.

Key offensive highlights include two RBIs, Schofield and Cherrington, and contributions from Diaz, Horsey, Francisco, and Ramos.

On the mound, Colin Adams and Carter Boone shared their pitching duties, with Boone tallying three strikeouts in three innings, and Adams added two strikeouts in four innings.

Defensively, Ramos (7 put outs), Francisco (5) and Richards (4) provided strong support in this area.

Game 3 – Streak ends when Gira Monster takes the finale

East Arizona bounced back in the final match, handing Roughrider a 6-13 loss. Richards and Francisco scored twice each, while Diaz and Ramos added one run each. Their run was driven by Richards, Nichols (2) and Cherington.

On the base pass, Richards (2), Horse and Francisco stole the bass and showed off Yavapay’s offensive playing style.

Ty Thompson hit three batters in 3.1 innings, while Shane Hooper added two strikeouts with one bailout. Peterson (7 put outs) and Lucas Franz (6) fixed their defense.

Next – Yabapai goes home

Roughrider will return to Homefield on Wednesday, March 5th for a doubleheader with South Mountain Community College. Game 1 is set at 12pm and Game 2 continues at 2:30pm.
