Yearly crime statistics from the Mobile Police Department indicate a decline in violent crime.

Crime rates in port cities have noticeably decreased over the past year, as highlighted in an annual report from the Mobile Police Department. Officials attribute this decline to the persistent efforts of their leadership across the district.

“Overall, all precincts are seeing a drop,” said MPD Chief William Jackson. “Yes, some areas have higher call volumes than others, but as a city, we’re down.”

When comparing 2023 to 2024, violent crime overall has decreased by more than 11%. Since 2022, there’s been a 20% drop recorded in this category. Over the last decade, Mobile’s violent crime rate has plummeted by over 56%.

Incidents involving gunfire aimed at vehicles or residences saw a 42% decline. Reports of rape decreased by over 28%, and robbery fell by about 15%, although aggravated assault saw a decline of nearly 10%.

“When we look at murder, rape, and robbery, those numbers are significant,” the chief noted. “The trends also extend to theft and other related crimes.”

Yet, there remains a troubling area that hasn’t seen improvement.

“Domestic violence remains an issue across all categories, whether it’s murder, robbery, or assaults. These cases heavily influence crime statistics,” Jackson pointed out.

The chief expressed pride in the department’s leadership and their dedication to improving these numbers.

“The commanders of the precincts take their roles personally. I couldn’t be prouder of them; this is their city too,” he emphasized. “They don’t just work here, they genuinely want it to be the safest place possible.”
