‘You Are Not Welcome Here’: Dearborn’s Muslim Mayor Criticized for Outburst at Christian Resident

Mayor’s Controversial Remarks Spark Outrage

The Democratic mayor of Dearborn, who is Muslim, has become a trending topic on social media after telling local Christian residents, “you’re not welcome.”

During a City Council meeting on September 9th, Mayor Abdullah Hammoud addressed Edward “Ted” Barham, who opposed renaming a local intersection in honor of Osama Shibulani. Shibulani is a publisher known for his support of groups like Hezbollah and Hamas.

Barham described the decision as “inappropriate,” likening it to naming a street “Hezbollah Street” or “Hamas Street.” After Barham’s comments, Hammoud responded strongly. He accused Barham of promoting racism and Islamophobia, particularly in his remarks about what he called a “genocide” in Gaza, suggesting that Barham should reconsider his stance.

“You may live here, but as your mayor, I want you to understand that you are not welcome,” Hammoud stated. He added, “The day you leave town will be the day we celebrate your departure.”

Hammoud went on to accuse Barham of publicly criticizing Muslims, claiming he had posted hurtful content about Islam on YouTube. “His name has been associated with negativity, but I spoke at a ceremony honoring him because he contributed significantly to this community,” Hammoud asserted about Shibulani during his remarks.

Shibulani, the subject of the controversy, has a history of praising Hezbollah and Hamas. He has previously claimed that while figures like George W. Bush see these groups as terrorists, many view them as freedom fighters. “We are Arabs supporting Palestinians in their struggle, no matter where we are,” he has stated, arguing that the resistance can take many forms.

The decision to honor Shibulani with a street sign originated from Wayne County, not the Dearborn City Council. Hammoud was elected as mayor in 2021, reflecting the demographic changes in the area. His office has yet to respond to inquiries about the incident.
