Meg Phipps, a woman incarcerated at Alderson Federal Prison in West Virginia while Stewart was serving his sentence, recalled Stewart smuggling food. Phipps said Stewart had managed to maintain his crafty skills while in prison.

“The way we communicated was through notes, handwritten notes, and someone in the cottage or dormitory. We had to wait for someone to pick it up,” Phipps explained.

She went on to say that one day Stewart gave her a note and suggested they meet.

“She also sent me a baked apple with that note, which means I'm already working on the idea of ​​microwave cooking in dorms and cottages, and the resources available. Because it had caramel in it and maybe cinnamon in it,''' Phipps said in a clip posted to People magazine.

She explained that sneaking food was strictly prohibited, but somehow Stewart managed to do it.

“I think some of it may have come from the cafeteria, but that's not what it should be,” Phipps told CNN.

Another former inmate, Susan Spry, said Stewart discovered the only way to cook.

“Everyone smuggles food out of their kitchens. I mean, what else are you going to make? Unless it's smuggled food,” Spree said. She went on to admit that she also smuggled food.

Stewart's prison friends said she worked in the prison's administration building, giving fans a clearer picture of what life was like during her incarceration.
