The Yuma High School baseball team will face even more challenges in the coming weeks.
Yuma will be home Saturday for the doubleheader against Holyoke. The Dragons entered the week with a 7-4 record, ranking him fifth on the Class 2A Ratings Index. Yuma will also play a non-league game at Brush on Tuesday.
Yuma finished 24th in the RPI this week. Yuma has lost six in a row after being swept at home by Wiggins on Tuesday. The Tigers, currently 8-11, have struggled this season, finishing 25th in RPI before Tuesday’s game.
Yuma is 4-12 and was eliminated Tuesday in the second game, 8-3 and 13-8.
The opening game was tied by 1 point after the 1st inning. However, Wiggins gradually began to pull away with two runs in the third, three in the fifth, and two more in the seventh.
Yuma finally got back on the board after giving up two runs in his final at-bat, but it wasn’t enough.
Wiggins went 8-7, just one more hit than Yuma. Both teams tied his seven walks, and Wiggins actually had 13 strikeouts against Yuma’s seven. However, the Tigers were able to take advantage when runners came on base.
Brody Sheffield had two hits, including a double, Yuma scored, Silas Bauke doubled, Jonathan Thomson had two, Leiri Trejo had one, Hugo Montez had one, and Angel Escobar had one. 1 RBI, with Carson Lynch scoring one. 1 RBI hit.
Baucke went the first five innings on the hill. He took 11 of his and in 5 walks he only allowed 3 hits, but still lost. In his last two innings, Montez allowed him one hit while he struck out two and walked two.
Yuma trailed 6-2 when he parlayed four hits to six runs at Nightcap to lead 8-6. However, the former Indians failed to produce an offense in their final three at-bats. Wiggins scored one in the fifth and two in the sixth for a 9-8 lead and allowed four in the top of the seventh.
Thomson had 3 hits, 1 RBI, 1 RBI, Bauke had 2 hits (double, 1 RBI, 1 RBI), Trejo had 2 hits (double, 1 RBI, 1 RBI), Marvin Duarte had 2 RBIs, Jake Hagemeyer had 1 RBI-double run and Scoring a run, Sheffield had one RBI and one run scored, while Lynch had one RBI and one run scored.
Trejo went through the first five innings on the hill, striking out six, walking three, allowing seven runs on five hits and allowing three earned runs. Sheffield had 3 strikeouts, 2 walks, 6 runs and 5 earned runs on hits. Montez advanced to the final in the top of the seventh inning.
Yuma County rivals Yuma and Ray competed in a contest last Saturday in Ray that was nearly identical to the one played in Yuma the previous week. This time, it was Ray who took his eighth-round, 9-8 walk-off victory of the night in the series of the season between rivals.
As in the previous matchup, both teams took turns posting big innings.
Yuma leads 2-0 in the top of the first inning. The former Indians led him 3-2 as Ray scored his five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-3 lead.
However, Yuma quickly came back in the top of the sixth with crooked numbers of his own, scoring five runs to regain an 8–7 lead.
The Eagles hit a run in the home half to equalize. Neither team scored in the seventh and the game was sent to extra innings.
Yuma scored no points in the first half. Ray then got two hitters on base thanks to a walk, followed by a hit driving on the winning run.
The combined team had 23 strikeouts, 13 of which were by Yuma. Ray got 9 hits and Yuma got 8.
Baucke had three hits, two RBIs and one RBI, including his third home run of the season. Trejo had 1 hit and 1 RBI, Montez had 1 hit and 1 RBI, Thomson had 1 hit and 2 RBI, Sheffield had 1 hit and 1 RBI, Escobar had 1 hit and 2 RBI and Lynch had 1 RBI.
Baucke and Trejo both spent time on the hill, recording a combined 10 strikeouts, seven walks and seven earned runs.
