Yuma City Council gives the go-ahead for important projects and infrastructure improvements

Yuma City Council Meeting Addresses Urban Issues

Yuma, Arizona – The Yuma City Council met Wednesday evening to tackle a range of urban matters, including zoning modifications, liquor license approvals, and infrastructure funding.

A significant focus was on the rezoning of about 9.39 acres at 920 S. Avenue B, changing its designation from agricultural to limited commercial. The council’s approval of this change is anticipated to spur commercial growth in the area.

Furthermore, the council approved two major amendments to general plans, transitioning low-density residential zones to commercial use at locations on 7th Street and S. 21st Avenue, and at 764 S. 21st Avenue. These adjustments align with the city’s long-term development strategy.

The council also awarded a construction contract to Merrill Development for $270,382.46 to establish a traffic management center within the Yuma Public Works Building. This center is designed to improve real-time traffic flow monitoring and coordination throughout the city.

A joint purchase agreement was approved for medium and heavy trucks, including dump trucks and water tank vehicles, with an estimated total of $411,483.75. These trucks will assist with ongoing public works and maintenance efforts.

The council voted to transfer dog ownership to designated handlers, ensuring the welfare of a service dog from the Yuma Police Station upon its retirement.

An intergovernmental agreement was also ratified with the Marine Corps Air Base Yuma to enhance law enforcement collaboration and jurisdictional processes between the city and the military base.

During the meeting, two new liquor licenses were granted. Sun from Gun Cigars, located at Mama Su Bar & Lounge on 1893 E. 16th Street, and another at 1651 S. Arizona Avenue, both received approval for the Series #06 Bar Liquor License.

The council conducted hearings on biennial development fee audits, as mandated by state law, allowing residents to share their views on how these fees are utilized to support the city’s infrastructure and services.

With these recent approvals, Yuma is advancing in development, infrastructure improvements, and public safety.

The next city council meeting is set for early March, where further zoning and development topics will be discussed.
