The girls’ basketball team at Yuma High School needs to refresh and energize for the postseason.
Yuma will have a full week of practice before starting District play in the Confluence-Metro-Longs Peak District Semi-Finals this Friday.
“We haven’t had four days of practice in the last few weeks,” head coach Jeremy Robinson said. think.”
Yuma appeared in three games each in the final three weeks of the regular season, going 12-7 overall. The former Indians also went 5-3 at Lower Platte. This is the program’s best show in the league in years.
And this season Lower Platt is tied with Ray for the top four RPI teams in 2A (Merino, Wiggins, Sedgwick County and Akron) and five of the top 12.
Lower Platt’s district tournament is scheduled for Donnybrook this week.
However, Yuma is currently a 3A and the top seed in the district.The Tribe is 5th overall in the 3A metrics (CHSAA RPI and MaxPreps rankings). The next closest is his second seed in the district, St. He Mary’s Academy in 19th place. No. 3 seed Faith Christian is No. 31, No. 4 seed Prospect Ridge Academy and No. 5 seed Manual are both in their 30s, No. 6 seed Stargate and No. 7 seed Lotus are in their 50s. .
District action began Tuesday with Prospect Ridge beating Manual 61-37, Faith Christian beating Stargate 46-20, and St. Mary’s Academy beating Lotus School of Excellence 44-1.
Yuma will face Prospect Ridge on Friday in the semi-finals at Manual High School, where Friday and Saturday action will be held at the Thunderdome. St. Mary’s Academy will now face Faith Christian in his one semi-final.
Friday’s game slot was not decided until after Tuesday’s game. The Yuma administration wanted the match to start as soon as possible. Game times on Friday are 1:00 PM, 2:30 PM, 4:00 PM, 5:30 PM and 7:00 PM.
The district is playing up to 6th place and will play the fifth-place play-off on Saturday at 10:00 and 11:30 am (Yuma’s team will not participate in these games), and at 1:00 and 2:30 pm. There will be a 3rd place match and a championship game.4:00 pm and 5:30 pm
“We need a quick response[from Friday to Saturday],” Robinson said.
The district champions will host a four-team regional competition next weekend. A district champion needs to be in the top 16 of his RPI to hold, so Yuma is in safe territory if he wins the district.
“This is the first time I’ve had a little breather,” Robinson said. “Hopefully it needs a little refreshment.”
Yuma has had a busy schedule in recent weeks, dealing with several illnesses and minor injuries.
The former Indians capped that stretch last weekend by splitting their home game into two.
The first was a 48-41 win over Byers last Friday.
Yuma looked headed for victory with a 27-12 lead midway through the second quarter. But the home girls went cold as Byers trailed just 28-25 at halftime to close out the half with a 13-1 run.
The game remained tight in the second half, with Byers equalizing on 39 in the fourth. However, Yuma held on with a 9-0 run to secure the win. Lee Richardson missed the entire third quarter due to foul trouble, and Emma Rail was sidelined until the fourth as she returned from an illness. Still, the women’s team once again showed depth in pulling out victories.
Richardson still has 14 points and 3 steals, Cadiz Robinson has 7 points and 5 rebounds, Liddy Day has 6 points and 3 rebounds, Lindsey Mekelberg has 5 points and 2 rebounds, Jaylin Mekelberg has 4 points and 9 rebounds, Lail finished with 3 points and Carolina Ross with 2 points. , 3 rebounds and 3 steals, Ashley Ibanez 2 points and 4 rebounds, Alina Moran 2 points and 4 rebounds, Jade Langwitz 2 points, Jazmine Sotero 1 point, Bailey Nicewonger 1 rebound.
Yuma ran into top-ranked and undefeated Payton in 3A on Saturday afternoon in a match that was rescheduled three times.
The women’s home team lost 48-35 but had an early lead. Yuma looked like she was leading 15-8, but she only scored two points in the second quarter and at halftime she trailed 19-17.
Yuma held on in the second half, drawing 38-35 in the fourth quarter, but the Panthers closed out the game with a 10-0 run.
Robinson said, “I’ve had a few breakdowns on defense against Payton, but I’ve never been disappointed with the defense overall.”
