After applying for and being denied many grants, Yuma airport finally landed something that could help improve traveler safety – Vanessa Gongora report for 13 On Your Side
Yuma, Arizona (KYMA, KECY) – Yuma International Airport gets several upgrades after receiving a $1.1 million grant.
Twenty years later, local airport floors are being renovated to improve safety, accessibility and efficiency.
The award came from infrastructure investments led by Senators Kirsten Cinema and Mark Kelly.
Cinema said in a press release: Boost Yuma’s economy. ”
All of the 20-year-old floors will be replaced with tiles to make it easier for travelers and workers, according to Gen Grosse, a property and community official at Yuma International Airport.
“There are tiles and carpets throughout the airport terminal, so there are transition pieces in between,” says Grosse. “And it’s spread across multiple areas on the main floor, so they’re things we like to take care of, and in doing so we eliminate tripping hazards.”
Welton resident Kathy Coughland says this is good for the community and an investment in our airport.
“We have a lot of people with small children. Maintaining a good, safe and quality environment is very important,” says Coffland.
Grosse said a date for the improvement has not yet been determined.
“So the airport team is looking forward to finalizing all the project plans. Once that’s done, we need to order the materials,” explains Grosse.
From there, a step-by-step process of where to start and how to finish is implemented.
She said she will keep the community informed about the status of the project.
At this point. The airport is still awaiting receipt of funds and will continue the planning process.
