Maria Elena Cruz had been a senior court judge in Yuma -gun for several years.
Governor Katie Hobbus, Arizona, has selected the Arizona Appeal Court Judge to fill the seats of the Supreme Court of Arizona.
Cruz, Democratic members in Yuma -gun were announced on Wednesday last year as the choice of the governor who filled vacant seats by Judge Robert Brutinel.
Cruz worked as a senior court judge for several years before being appointed Appeal Court in 2017. She has been a long -time resident in Yuma -gun and has obtained a legal degree at the University of Arizona.
Cruz is the first justice that was appointed by the Democratic Governor to the State Supreme Court for the first time in several years. All of the other six sitting justice was appointed by former Governor Doug Ducy and Yang Brewer.
According to the governor’s office, Cruz is also the first Ratina and the first black man in the Supreme Court of Arizona.
