Yuma man formally charged with sexual abuse

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – A man accused of sexually abusing a child under the age of 5 for more than a decade appeared again in Yuma County Superior Court.

James David Schultz, 44, faces about 40 sexual abuse-related charges.

We were able to obtain a 17-page indictment document outlining each of the charges.

The abuse took place intermittently from 2003 to 2023, according to documents, and Schultz has been charged with dozens of felony counts, including eight counts of sexual conduct with a minor and five counts of sexual assault of a minor.

In addition to detailing the sexual abuse, the suit also states that “the defendant groped, fondled and manipulated the female victim's breasts.”

Schultz also faces 17 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor.

The document listed the names of the footage, saying, “A video of the victim wearing her best necklace. An image of the victim wearing sparkly velvet. And an image of the victim wearing teal and pink princess.”

The charges for crimes that allegedly occurred between 2003 and 2005 include:

  • One count of sexual abuse of a child.
  • one count of indecent acts on a minor;
  • Two counts of aggravated assault.
  • one count of sexual conduct with a minor;
  • one count of sexual assault on a minor;

The charges for crimes that allegedly occurred between 2006 and 2009 include:

  • three counts of sexual conduct with a minor;
  • One count of sexual abuse of a child.
  • one count of furnishing harmful materials to a minor;

The charges for crimes that allegedly occurred between 2008 and 2011 include:

  • One case of sexual abuse.
  • one count of aggravated assault;
  • one count of sexual conduct with a minor;
  • one count of sexual assault on a minor;

The charges for crimes that allegedly occurred between 2009 and 2011 include:

  • two counts of sexual conduct with a minor;
  • two counts of sexual assault on a minor;
  • one count of aggravated assault;

The alleged crimes, which allegedly occurred around 2016, include:

  • one count of sexual conduct with a minor;
  • one count of sexual assault on a minor;

The charges are for crimes that allegedly occurred between about 2021 and 2023. The victims have not been identified.

  • 17 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor.

Deputy state prosecutors said they were still investigating who else may have been abused.

“The investigation into additional victims is ongoing and remains ongoing,” Deputy State Attorney Robert Cedarson said.

One of the victims appeared in court.

“The victims are present but do not wish to speak in court,” a representative for the victims said.

Schultz's lawyer, Jose Padilla, made the request ahead of his next court appearance.

“Yes, your Honor, we are going to ask for additional time, simply because we have not looked into the discovery requests from the state,” said defense attorney Jose Padilla.

The judge granted the defense an adjournment of more than a month.

Schultz is being held in the Yuma County Jail on $50,000 bail.

He is due to appear in court again in early May.
