Yuma mayor expecting 1,000 migrant crossings per day after Title 42 ends

PHOENIX — Yuma Mayor Doug Nicholls expects his border town to see about 1,000 immigrant transits per day after Title 42 ends next month.

nichols said KTAR News The Gaydos and Chad Show on 92.3 FM On Thursday, there will be stagnant demand for border crossings, which will be released after COVID-related border policies restricting asylum seekers’ entry into the country end on May 11.

“We expect to peak at different times,” says Nicholls.

Nichols, like Sen. Kirsten Cinema, sees no evidence that the Biden administration has a strong plan to counter the expected surge.

Cinema expects the immigration issue to “decisively worsen” once Title 42 ends.

At the state level, Nichols said he has been in constant communication with Gov. Katie Hobbs’ office about plans for the end of Title 42, including consideration of transportation once immigrants enter the country.

Nichols’ hope is that Hobbes will use the Arizona National Guard.

“The best thing the governor can do is definitely get involved with the National Guard, get more buses to this location, and find out where we can get people to avoid being let loose on the streets of Yuma,” Nichols said. I got
