The City of Yuma has been named the Great American Defense Community 2025 by the National Defense Community Association (ADC) in partnership with the program’s official sponsor, USAA. Yuma is one of three communities across the country chosen for this year’s honor and recognizes exceptional support for military facilities and those who serve.
“The Yuma community is a strong supporter of the US military, our service members and veterans,” Mayor Doug Nichols said. “The designation of the great American defence community reflects Yuma’s strong commitment and the true spirit of patriotism that exists here. We are proud of the designation of the GADC!”
Yuma, Marine Corps Air Station and Yuma, home to the US Army Yuma Certification Area, have formed a deeply lasting partnership with military neighbours. The city integrates military considerations into development and infrastructure plans, and aligns local growth with national defense priorities. This long-standing collaboration has led to Yuma becoming a national model for military community relations.
Yuma’s perception also highlights the city’s investment in education and workforce development. Arizona’s first local school district was one of the first to receive a Purple Star School designation. Additionally, programs such as The Dandelion Club and Student Ambassadors provide social and emotional support to military children and help them feel connected and supported. At the same time, career transition initiatives such as Arizona@Work-Yuma County and Arizona Western College’s Veterans Education & Training Services (VETS) program will provide service members with a pathway to build civilian careers.
ADC President Karen Holt said: “Yuma stands out as a leader in supporting military-related students and offers innovative programs that inspire the military community around the country.”
America’s Great Defense Community The program was launched by the ADC in 2016 and celebrated the communities and communities supporting military facilities for their extraordinary commitment to improving the quality of life of the military.
