Yuma Welcomes Community to Water Safety Day on June 7

Water Safety Day in Yuma

The Greater Yuma Water Safety Alliance (GYWSA) is hosting Water Safety Day on Saturday, June 7th, at the Valley Aquatic Centre located at 4381 W. 18th St. This free event is designed for families and aims to promote water safety education through fun activities.

Event Highlights

The day’s festivities will start with a pool party from 9 AM to 11 AM. There will be music, complimentary hot dogs, giveaways, and interactive booths focused on water safety provided by local groups and businesses.

As part of the event, representatives from the Arizona Game and Fish Division will be there to offer a life jacket exchange program. Really, it’s a chance for families to learn about staying safe in and around water through engaging demonstrations and hands-on activities.

From 11 AM to 6 PM, the pool will also be open to the public for free swimming. Attendees can take part in safety demonstrations conducted by Yuma City Fire Station and park and recreation personnel. Topics will include CPR basics, Life Jacket Fittings, Swiftwater Rescue, and the “Reach or Throw, Don’t Go” technique.

Jen Miller, the Communications Manager, mentioned, “Water Safety Day is a fantastic event for our community. It’s not just a fun kick-off to summer; it’s also an opportunity to share critical life-saving information with your family. We want everyone to feel prepared when they’re near water!”

GYWSA is dedicated to promoting five layers of protection against drowning: barriers and alarms, supervision, swimming lessons, life jackets, and emergency readiness. They work throughout the year to encourage these practices and other safety initiatives in the Yuma area.
