Pinal County, Arizona (3TV/CBS 5) — A fatal crash involving an ambulance closed nearly 10 miles of Interstate 10 outside Valley early Sunday morning.
The crash occurred around 6:30 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 10 near SR 387 just outside Casa Grande, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. The Arizona Department of Public Safety said the American Medical Response ambulance was headed east when the driver “may have fallen asleep.” The vehicle reportedly lost control and crashed onto the road. The vehicle veered from one end to the other, then overturned and landed on its wheels. There were no patients in the ambulance, but the driver was a man and his colleague, a woman, was in the passenger seat.
When two good Samaritans stopped to help, a man and a woman were in the second and third cars, but a fourth vehicle collided with the ambulance, killing both men and women. He shot down a good Samaritan. The man died at the scene, and the woman was taken to the hospital. The extent of her injuries is unknown at this time.
The driver and the good Samaritan who hit the ambulance sustained minor injuries, and the ambulance driver also sustained minor injuries. His colleague, who was in the passenger seat of the ambulance, was taken to hospital in critical condition. The alcohol status of the driver who hit the ambulance is under investigation, but police believe he was impaired before the crash.
A spokesperson for American Medical Response issued the following statement:
Authorities closed the Casablanca Street freeway for several hours, 16 miles from the scene of the first crash. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Eastbound lanes reopened just after 2:30 p.m.
