In a letter Monday night, county attorneys said the order was an “unnecessary and unjustifiable” violation of their duties and obligations.
The letter echoed the words of Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell at a recent press conference, saying that the order “sets a dangerous precedent” and that another future governor will press the attorney general for all kinds of crimes. It opens up the possibility of assigning permissions.
Attorney General Chris Mays cited action taken in the 1976 murder of Arizona journalist Don Boles. County attorneys say the precedent applies only to existing individual lawsuits.
Pinal County Attorney Kent Volkmer (Republican) was one of the county attorneys who signed the letter. Volkmer appeared on The Show to discuss his main concerns about the executive order.
