Belmont – Two people were reportedly killed late Tuesday night when their vehicle slammed into the path of a BNSF train.
The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office reported two passengers in a 2007 Jeep Patriot in an area east of Belmont along Interstate 40.
BNSF reported the collision around 11:30 pm on November 15th. During the initial investigation, the train stopped him for six hours.
Two people in the jeep were confirmed dead by responding medical personnel.
“At the time of the accident, the Jeep appeared to be driving off-road rather than at a railroad crossing,” the CCSO reported Wednesday.
The Coconino County Coroner’s Office also responded to the scene. The Ponderosa Fire Department, Department of Public Safety and Flagstaff Police Department also assisted.
The victim’s name will not be released until the entire family has been notified.
