Phoenix — A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention The study concluded that 2021 was the worst year yet for West Nile virus disease in Maricopa County.
Maricopa County reported 1,487 West Nile cases in 2021, including 101 deaths, according to the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
West Nile fever is a mosquito-borne disease that can affect the brain and spinal cord.
Although most patients do not develop symptoms, the disease can be fatal.
2021 is also the year of the wet monsoon, when public health officials warned of a possible flooding season for the West Nile.
“We were all a little surprised by the magnitude of the surge,” said Melissa Kerchumer of the Maricopa County Public Health Department. It reminded us that it could affect our healthcare system.”
Maricopa County Vector Control uses spray trucks to address mosquito problems in affected areas. But officials said they didn’t want things to go that far.
“to [the] It’s time to fog the streets,” said John Townsend, of Maricopa County Vector Control, who said, “The horses are out of the fence.”
Townsend said mosquito control should start with residents, who can see stagnant water and mosquito eggs and get rid of them before they hatch.
CDC officials said these numbers point to the need for more public education and prevention.
