Phoenix (3TV/CBS 5) – The Pinal County Sheriff's Office announced Friday that a second arrest has been made in the attack on a teenage boy in the desert near Queen Creek.
Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb said in a social media video that 18-year-old Garrett Bagshaw was taken into custody in Mesa on Friday and booked into the Pinal County Jail in the afternoon. Lam added that his office continues to investigate the attack and is working to identify additional suspects.
Investigators say Bagshaw was part of a group that assaulted a 17-year-old boy on Nov. 18 around 10 p.m. Wagon road and quail road, a few miles south of Hunt Highway and Hawes Road. According to PCSO, Bagshaw, Jacob Pennington, 20, of Gilbert, and others assaulted the victim by punching and kicking him. The boy was eventually rescued by his friend and the two escaped. Pennington was arrested Wednesday, and court documents say he admitted to having a relationship with the “Gilbert Goons.”
The sheriff had a simple message for the other suspects. “If you were involved in this incident, my advice is to turn yourself in now, because we will find you,” Lamb said.
Friday's arrest is the seventh this week in connection with East Valley-related teen violence. Two adults and two teens were arrested Wednesday in connection with an attack on a teenage boy in the Gilbert In-N-Out parking lot in August. Pennington was arrested Wednesday in connection with the Pinal County incident. Mesa police then arrested a 17-year-old on Thursday for the May attack near Val Vista Drive and Pueblo Avenue, north of Southern Avenue. Gilbert Police are currently asking the public for help identifying suspects in nine juvenile assault investigations. So far, Pennington is reportedly the only person to have acknowledged his connection to the “Gilbert Goons.”
As of Friday night, no arrests had been made in the case of 16-year-old Preston Lord. He was attacked after a Halloween party in Queen Creek in October and later died. His death has heightened awareness of teen violence in the East Valley. His stepmother made an emotional plea for justice to police Thursday at a Chandler City Council meeting.
