Gila County Fair Returns to Globe’s Fairgrounds
The Gila County Fair is set to come back to Globe’s Fairgrounds from September 17-20, marking its 56th anniversary. This event is always a highlight for the townspeople of Globe-Miami and surrounding areas.
Fully organized by volunteers, the fair is the result of a year’s worth of preparation. After each fair wraps up, these dedicated individuals start brainstorming for the next one. They put in a tremendous amount of effort, purely out of love for their community. When you’re enjoying the festivities, it’s nice to remember those who make it all happen.
This year’s fair promises to mix in beloved traditions with exciting headliners.
Wednesday and Thursday: Old-fashioned Fun and Live Performances
Wednesday kicks off the fair with a very affordable admission fee of $5, making it a great day for families. That evening holds special significance for 4-H members during the annual “Old Fair Night.” Tickets will go on sale at 5 PM, with auctions starting at 6 PM. Items from local vendors and 4-H members will be sold to fundraise for the program. Expect traditional games like Gunnysack Races, Pie Eating Contests, and plenty of Raffles. It’s a night focusing on community spirit, laughter, and youth.
On Thursday, entry goes up to $5 per person. Gates will open at 8 AM and close at 10 PM, with the Carnival also kicking off that day. There will be thrilling rides, classic games, and all the fair food you could want. The evening will be highlighted by a live performance from local rapper Yoony Gunna, adding a fresh vibe to the fair.
Friday: Livestock, Go-Kart Racing, and Smashmath
Come Friday, excitement builds with a youth cow show showcasing the hard work of local 4-H participants. There will also be a musical performance featuring go-kart races, a magic show, and Smashmath at 8 PM. Get ready to sing and dance along to throwback hits—it’s all about enjoying time with the community.
Saturday: Livestock Auction and Hunter Hayes
Saturday is the grand finale of the fair, and it’s also the most eagerly awaited day. The Young Livestock Auctions take place at noon near the livestock barn, where you can bid on animals raised by local youths and support their efforts while stocking up on fresh meat. This auction is crucial for raising funds and appreciation for the kids who have cared for the animals for months.
Later that evening, country music enthusiasts will be entertained by a performance from Hunter Hayes at 8 PM. If country isn’t your thing, don’t worry—there’s something for everyone.
What is 4-H?
4-H is a youth development organization that empowers young individuals through hands-on learning in agriculture, science, health, and citizenship. Initially aimed at teaching agricultural skills, it now covers a wide range of programs including robotics and public speaking. The four H’s—Head, Heart, Hands, and Health—form the foundation of every project.
Interested in Participating Next Year?
The fair isn’t just for 4-H members; it reflects community involvement, and anyone can participate in the exhibitions or shows. For many local families, the fair has become a cherished tradition.
One long-time volunteer noted that her son, despite being busy with school, sports, and other activities, still plans to attend this year. When asked why, he simply said, “Of course, that’s a family tradition.” That encapsulates the spirit of this fair: it’s about creating lasting connections.
Each year, registration for entries is held on the Wednesday before the fair, and approved exhibits need to be submitted by the Saturday before the opening day. This process is straightforward, and can be done online or in-person with the help of one of the many dedicated volunteers. They truly keep the fair running smoothly.
