Kamala Harris Not Running for California Governor
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer discussed on Fox News’ Ingraham Angle that while former Vice President Kamala Harris has decided not to run for governor of California, he hopes to see her aim for the presidency in 2028, which he believes could benefit the Republican Party.
On the same show, Harris confirmed her absence from the 2026 governor’s race, stating she’s not in elected office “for now.” When Laura Ingraham pressed Comer for his thoughts, he pointed out Harris’s unclear stance on critical issues, implying that her speech suggested things might deteriorate before they improve. Comer noted that despite a decent 3% GDP figure, uncertainties remain.
Comer added, “There’s no assurance that Harris would even succeed in a governor’s race.”
Speculation about Harris’s possible candidacy for governor began in March. A University of California, Irvine poll indicated that while she may have some support, a significant 52% of independents were “not sure” about her. Comer remarked about her past rise as a Democratic candidate, suggesting she may not have necessarily emerged victorious even if the primary process had been shortened.
“Honestly, I’m relieved she’s stepping back. I would rather she focus on a presidential run again,” he said, implying that if she were to gain the Democratic nomination, it could pave the way for a Republican victory.
In her statements, Harris expressed her affection for California and its people while also reflecting on the challenges the political system has faced. She emphasized the need for new ideas and fresh perspectives to drive change, acknowledging that while values may remain constant, the approach must evolve.
With Harris officially out of the race, other Democratic candidates like Lt. Colonel Eleni Kunarakis and former HHS Executive Director Tony Thurmond have emerged. On the Republican side, names like former Fox News host Steve Hilton and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco are notable contenders.
