Poll Reveals Mixed Views on DEI Programs Among Racial Groups
Recent findings from an AP-NORC poll indicate that both Black and Hispanic individuals are more inclined than their white counterparts to think that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs could potentially lead to increased discrimination against minorities.
Since the Biden-Harris administration took office, there has been significant investment in DEI initiatives, amounting to millions of dollars for various programs. Large corporations and universities have started to adopt similar measures, particularly after the previous administration rolled back some initiatives.
The survey involved 1,437 adults and was conducted from July 10 to 14. It found that fewer than half of Americans consider DEI efforts beneficial to those who intend to support them, as noted by PBS.
The data suggests that DEI programs might actually heighten discrimination against Black individuals. About 40% of Black respondents and one-third of Hispanic respondents expressed concerns, while roughly a quarter of white adults also echoed these sentiments. The polls also highlighted notable divisions among racial groups regarding the perception of discrimination affecting Hispanics, as reported by PBS.
Among white respondents, many identified as Democrats and acknowledged the existence of discrimination against Black and Hispanic people. In contrast, only about 25% of white independents and Republicans shared similar views, according to PBS.
Furthermore, only four in ten respondents believe that DEI initiatives help reduce discrimination against Black individuals, and merely a third feel the same for Hispanics, women, and Asians. Between 33% and 41% of those surveyed opined that DEIs won’t have any significant impact, while about 25% believe these programs actually exacerbate discrimination.
The poll also revealed a decline in the belief that Black individuals face “high levels of discrimination,” dropping from 60% in 2021 to 45% currently. Similarly, perceptions of discrimination against Asians decreased from 45% in 2021 to 32% now.
