Firefighters gain control over Woods Fire near Sedona

Village of Oak Creek, Arizona

Firefighters are making progress against the wildfires burning southeast of Sedona. Coconino State Forest officials noted on Friday that the wildfires were about 50% contained and that firefighting efforts would ramp up significantly on Saturday.

The fires were ignited by lightning, affecting an area of 59 acres approximately two miles east of the village of Oak Creek, specifically at the top of Horse Mesa. Officials mentioned that the combination of firefighters working to secure boundaries and the current high humidity is aiding their efforts.

Firefighters plan to continue safeguarding the fire’s perimeter, monitoring hot spots, and extinguishing them while preparing for the potential arrival of a monsoon storm. Currently, only around 35 firefighters are dedicated to the Woods Fire.

Smoke remains visible in the vicinity as the situation develops. By noon on Friday, residents were advised to prepare for possible evacuation.

However, forest closure orders are still in place. Hikers are restricted from certain trails, including Jack’s Canyon, Woods Canyon, and Hot Loop.
