The Cochise County Fire Department has shared some crucial insights about fire safety that many residents might not be aware of.

In numerous counties, there aren’t dedicated fire districts to contact, which often results in increased response times and higher costs.

A glance at the map of fire districts in Cochise County shows large areas with limited fire coverage. These regions are referred to as the Fire District Desert.

Recently, fires occurred at local vineyards just outside the Wilcox Fire District’s compensation area.

A visit to a nearby residence revealed that many homeowners were unaware of the challenges in extinguishing a fire if it reached their properties. Most assumed that help would always be available when fire threatened.

Witnessing the fire at Coronado Vineyard on Sunday morning illustrated that firefighters and equipment aren’t always guaranteed.

When you’re within city limits, you can count on firefighters being there. But, as Dale Hadfield from the Wilcox Fire Department points out, they don’t have to respond beyond that area.

According to the fire chief, geographical boundaries don’t dictate their willingness to help, even though they are the only fire department for miles. “We can’t stand at the limits of cities and see the world burn,” Hadfield remarked. “We’re going to go out and do what we have to do.”

Nonetheless, the draw away from the district means longer wait times for assistance in critical situations. Hadfield mentioned, “There have been fires where people lost their lives outside of town due to the distance we have to travel.”

The Sierra Vista Fire Department emphasizes the importance of being enrolled in a local fire district, explaining it’s a statewide policy.

“If you’re part of a district for around $300 a year, and your property catches fire, you won’t receive a bill,” Hadfield added.
