Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust Gives $6 Million in Grants to Support Higher Education in Maricopa County

Phoenix – August 22, 2025

The Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust has unexpectedly granted $6 million across six major universities in Arizona. This funding aims to bolster the higher education mission within Maricopa County.

Each of these universities—Arizona State University, Clayton University, Grand Canyon University, Maricopa Community Colleges, Northern Arizona University, and University of Arizona—will receive individual grants of $1 million.

During a recent council meeting, the Piper Trust recognized the presidents of these institutions, expressing gratitude for their leadership and presenting the Higher Education Impact Grant. The purpose of these grants is to enhance their educational missions through various programs in Maricopa County, with no specific limitations on the types of projects that can be funded.

Steve Zabilsky, president and CEO of the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust, stated, “These grants reflect our commitment to the significant role that universities play in enhancing community health and strength. Education not only transforms student lives but also fosters economic growth, advances research, and enriches our culture.”

Presence in Maricopa County

Each recipient boasts a solid educational presence in Maricopa County, with numerous initiatives dedicated to healthcare and workforce development. Arizona State University has consistently ranked as one of the most innovative public research universities in the nation, serving over 37,000 students in 2024 and acting as a critical economic engine for Arizona.

Clayton University’s School of Medicine operates the Phoenix Health Science Campus, accommodating nearly 1,000 students focused on meeting the growing demand for health professionals.

Grand Canyon University celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2025, having graduated over 31,000 students thanks to both its Phoenix campus and online programs.

Maricopa Community Colleges ranks as the largest community college system in the country, with over 140,000 annual students across ten accredited schools, proving to be Arizona’s largest developer of the workforce with numerous high-demand certificate programs and degrees.

Northern Arizona University offers a range of workforce-aligned degree programs, particularly excelling in nursing and education. Partnering closely with Maricopa Community Colleges allows students to efficiently transfer credits and earn degrees without hefty relocation costs.

The University of Arizona’s School of Medicine located in Phoenix produces around 130 new doctors annually and facilitates extensive medical research. Its College of Nursing provides innovative programs, including a pioneering BSN in Integrated Health.
