Martin Polchas, current chairman of the Yuma County Board of Supervisors, met with the Arizona senator to discuss immigration reform.
YUMA, Ariz. (KECY, KYMA) – The Supreme Court has dismissed the Title 42 action, paving the way for the policy to end on May 11.
The policy now brings Yuma’s migrant transit to its lowest level in two years.
But the Biden administration expects crossings to surge again once Title 42 is gone.
So local legislators like Martin Polchas, chairman of the Supervisory Board, came to DC for answers.
When I met with both Senator Kirsten Cinema and Senator Mark Kelly.
“We need to control our borders, we need immigration reform,” said Polchas.
Polchas hopes Arizona senators will soon introduce a bipartisan border law.
“We are committed to finding real and lasting solutions that keep Arizona’s people safe, protect border communities like Yuma, and fix the holes in our broken immigration system.
Meanwhile, Republicans currently control the House.
And it’s stepping up its attacks on Democrats over the border crisis.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said Thursday in Cochise County, “Our border is not even operationally managed.
And when Polchas returns from Washington, DC comes to him.
Yuma is at the center of immigration conversations across the country.
As of next Thursday, the 23rd, 15 Republicans will be in town to tour the border and also hold hearings for the Judiciary Committee.
Polchas hopes lawmakers will leave the Washington, D.C. drama behind the Capitol.
“Go home and do something about it. Don’t come here and use it as a photo shoot,” said Polchas.
